Being around since 1946, and remaining successful all through that time is nothing short of astonishing when you consider the length of time the typical restaurant manages to successfully keep it’s doors open. 

So I have literally no hesitation in placing the Four Way Restaurant at the top of the list today. If you are out looking for delicious soul food in Memphis Tennessee, actually if you are looking for excellent soul food anywhere in the world you should stop by Four Way. They attract guests from the global community. And they also have a history of attracting major celebrities from across the spectrum. Including people like The Reverend Jesse Jackson, Elvis Presley, and Aretha Franklin amongst countless others. Four Way is not only a cool place to eat, but it’s got an amazing history and atmosphere as well. I highly recommend you give them a taste!

But coming in second place to that by no means, means that Peggy’s Just Heavenly Good Home Cooking isn’t as good or as heavenly as they claim.

Peggy’s specializes in southern cooking. So they will have all the classic soul food favorites that you are looking for. However, they prepare all of this food from scratch using top of the line ingredients. Which means you are going to be getting real authentic style soul food at Peggy's. When I think of soul food I really do think of an older grandma aged woman who knows how to make everything without the instructions on the box or buying anything pre-prepared. They know how to make it from scratch because they’ve made it millions of times before and have it perfected. 

And that’s exactly how Peggy’s Just Heavenly Good Home Cooking prepares it for you. I mean it’s the closest you are going to get to going to your own grandma’s house down south and having her prepare you dinner from scratch. I don’t have a ton to say about Mrs. Girlees Soul Food. They don’t have much of an online presence and that is one of the things that brought them down the list. However, from the online presence they do have, the consensus is clear. They have four and a half stars on Yelp and a 4.8 from customers on Facebook. Even though they are newer and not quite as established as some of the other restaurants on this list (Yup looking at you Four Way) they are leaving every customer that walks through their doors satisfied.

“I love this place for a quick pick up and go. They have a hot bar kind of like cafeteria style and their menu changes daily. Whenever, you're in the mood for some soul food, swing by and grab you a plate. Their cornbread is the best! The wait isn't that long but they are pretty busy during lunch.
