And when I write these articles my number one priority is making sure, that if you choose one of the restaurants that I recommend to you, that you have not only an enjoyable experience, but a thoroughly above expectations experience. 

And that is what brings Fixins to the top of the list today. Not only do they serve high quality soul food (that celebrates the history and traditions of African Americans) in an open and inclusive environment, they are also a full service restaurant. And if that wasn’t enough to solidify them at the top of the list today, the owner is also an Oak Park native. Fixins Soul Kitchen represents his lifelong dream of owning a restaurant in the neighborhood he grew up in. So I really, really wanted to list Sarom’s Southern Kitchen at the top of the list today. When I write these articles about different restaurants for GiftYa, I always try to make sure that I manage to recommend as many restaurants that accept GiftYa as I can. That’s what GiftYa pays me to do when writing these articles and I’m a good worker and try to do my best to make it happen within reason. However, since you guys were looking for such a specific type of food, it limits how many potential restaurants I have to weigh the different benefits of. Usually it's not a big deal. Typically the highest reviewed restaurants that I find on a topic our users are looking for just so happen to accept GiftYa and I get to recommend them anyways

That wasn’t the case today, only one restaurant on this list of the best soul food joints in Sacramento ended up acceptinghappening to accept GiftYa digital gift cards. And as such I really wanted to bump them up to number one on the list from number two. But that felt like it was missing, for lack of a better phrase, “journalistic integrity.”. (I mean when you think “journalist,” is the first thing that comes to mind, integrity? I bet it isn’t).  But I couldn’t put Sarom’s Southern Kitchen at the top of the list today even though Sarom’s boasts a four and a half star rating just like Fixins Soul Kitchen. 

And the reason I couldn’t do that, is because Sarom’s has a four and a half star rating with “only” 1200 reviews. Whereas Fixin’s has a four and a half star rating with over 1500 reviews. And as such, I didn’t think it was honest to put Sarom’s at the top of the list even though I really try to make sure my number one recommended restaurant accepts GiftYa. I prefer that you, the reader, have the most comfortable and easy experience that you can when you follow one of my recommendations. And the digital format of GiftYa really does make them super convenient and easy to use or send as a gift.

But all that aside, Sarom’s really does deserve the number two spot on the list today. On any other day of writing articles I would never come across a restaurant with over 1000 reviews AND a rating as high as four and a half stars. It is almost impossible to come across two of them for one list. In fact, before today, I would have said that it is entirely impossible. It has literally never happened to me before. So you can trust me when I say, if Fixins hadn’t had such incredibly high user reviews, Sarom’s would have easily made it to the top of the list today (even if they didn’t happen to accept GiftYa digital gift cards.) If Fixins isn’t an option, absolutely give Sarom’s Southern Kitchen a try. You won’t be disappointed. Nobody else has been.

Get Mo’ and Get Better Soul Food Right in Sacramento

Mo’Betta comes in at number three on our list for a few reasons. And no, one of them isn’t the fact that the restaurant’s address is on a street that shares my family name.

First of all, Fixins had ridiculously high reviews. There was no restaurant on the list that was going to top Fixins. And when it came down to it, I thought Sarom’s Southern Kitchen deserved to be above Mo’Betta Finger Foods because Sarom’s actually has a website. The biggest thing that held Mo’Betta  back was their lack of a dedicated website. Which means I couldn’t link you to their online menu. I always want the reader/customer to be able to check out the menu online ahead of time so they know if the restaurant even has the dish they are looking for when I recommend a place to them. Unfortunately I couldn’t do that with Mo’Betta. And that brought them down to third on our list. 

All that being said Mo’Betta boast a four star rating with close to two hundred reviews. Which is really quite good for a restaurant that has barely been open for two years. Even though they are still a young restaurant, they are building a positive reputation for themselves and that brought them up to third on our list. Even though Mo’Betta doesn’t have 1500 reviews like Fixins did, it boasts a very respectable four stars with a much lower number of reviews. And that means that even as a new restaurant that hasn’t totally found its bearings in the marketplace of Sacramento yet, they are still leaving the majority of their customers very happy with their meal and the overall experience. 

Which means that not only did they start out good, it means they will get even better as they continue to grow and meet the demands of their consumers. So whether you are reading this article the day it is posted, or three years down the line, I feel confident in recommending Mo’Betta Finger Foods to you.

Capitol Soul BBQ & Grill comes in at number four on our list today. The reason for that is that even though they also boast a four and a half star rating, they have far less reviews than Mo’Betta Finger Foods did with their four star rating. So I felt that Capitol Soul doesn’t have the extensive track record of the restaurants higher on the list.

That being said, they only opened in 2019. So it makes sense that they don’t have over 1000 reviews yet like some of the other soul food restaurants in Sacramento have. However, despite their young age, Capitol Soul is proving to be  a hit with locals and travelers alike.

Thelma’s Good Eats comes in at the bottom of our list today. But that’s not a dig on them. Almost every other restaurant on this list was rated at four and a half stars. Which is honestly unheard of when I am composing these lists of restaurants for you guys. And besides, even at number five on the list, that’s still the fifth best soul place in Sacramento which is obviously quite good still.   

That being said, one day it’s possible Thelma’s might get bumped up to number one on the list. The place only opened last year (2020) and as such hasn’t had nearly the time to build a review base and word of mouth like the soul food places that have been around so long they have become staples in Sacramento. In their short life span though, they have narrowed a unique corner of the soul food market. They specialize in serving gourmet fast food. Which is obviously different from the normal fast food you get at chain places. Which isn’t gourmet in any sense of the word, and let’s be honest, it’s barely even food in some instances

No, at Thelma's Good Eats you can count on getting your meal fast, but you can also count on it being made with fresh high quality ingredients. Which takes it a league beyond a standard fast food place, and I think gives them a unique edge over some of their competition. And truthfully, it is the reason I felt obligated to include them on the list today. I want you guys to have the best and most convenient options possible, and none of the other restaurants I researched specialized in a fast food style version of soul food. The convenience and ease of eating and ordering at Thelma’s guaranteed them their spot on the list today.
