3. Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant

One of a kind dining experience

2450 Grand Blvd | Kansas City | fritzskc.com

Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant is a dining experience like no other. Your kids will love ordering their food by telephone and watching it being delivered to your table by train. The look of wonder on your child’s face is one you won’t soon forget!

You may come for the train, but you’ll be back for the food. Fritz’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers are made with 100% ground beef, with grilled onions seared in the meat, and served on a toasted bun. The burgers are always cooked to order, so they are made fresh and just right.

Other menu items include hot dogs, salads, and sandwiches. The shakes are another reason people keep coming back to Fritz’s. Enjoy classic flavors like chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla, as well as some original flavors like oreo, cherry, and butterscotch.

You can purchase a GiftYa for Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant here!

“Came here for a quick bite to eat with my two small children. Had the bacon cheeseburger, large fries and two kids meals. Came up to just over $20 which is great for my wallet. We had a great time watching the trains go by. Awesome spot for kids.” - Yelp Review

4. Fat Jack’s Chicken and Fish

Soul food restaurant with family deals

5912 Blue Pkwy | Kansas City | fat-jacks-chicken-fish.business.site

This kid-friendly soul food restaurant in Kansas City is known for having the best jumbo shrimp in town, however they should be more known for their affordable family/party meal deals.

Fat Jack’s family/party deals include The Fat Jack Family Deal and the Fat Jack Party Deal. The Fat Jack Family Deal includes a 1 lb. fish, 12 jumbo shrimp, 12 wings, and 2 large sides, while the Fat Jack Party Deal includes a 2 lb. fish, 15 boneless tenders, 20 jumbo shrimp, 24 wings, and 2 large sides. Clearly, the former is better for a family of four while the latter is more-suited for a larger group or party. There are other family/party meal deals on their menu, so you should definitely check out their website to see if there’s something that works for your family!

In addition to their family meal deals, Fat Jack’s also has a kid’s menu. Here you will find happy-meal-like offerings such as boneless tenders, wings, and fish strips, each served with a small side and a drink.

“Fresh, delicious and friendly service! Our whole family LOVED the food. It's all made to order, not like a fast food restaurant- everything we got was delicious. My favorite was the catfish and okra and my boys loved the Mac n cheese.” - Yelp Review

5. Southern Kitchen

Southern comfort food and Cajun favorites

13135 State Line Rd | Kansas City | southernkitchenkc.com

Although Southern Kitchen offers and is aptly named for its Southern home-style dishes, they also offer many Cajun favorites thanks to owners and New Orleans transplants Mark and Robin Drouin.

Kids will find something yummy on the kids menu, choosing from fried fish, chicken tenders, and fried shrimp all served with fries, but they will absolutely love the dessert. They have classic New Orleans Beignets, deep fried donut pastries covered with powdered sugar, as well as Bread Pudding, a vanilla custard pudding mixed with cinnamon and topped with butter rum glaze. Many say it is “to die for” - and we believe them from the pictures and reviews alone.

While kids enjoy a simple kids menu and Beignets (don’t worry, parents can enjoy the dessert too!), parents will get to enjoy a delicious meal whether they choose a Southern comfort food like Shrimp and Grits or a Cajun favorite like Etouffee. And in case you don’t know what Etouffee is (we didn’t either), it’s shrimp or crawfish smothered in a butter blend of diced tomatoes, onions, celery and garlic served over rice. Yum!

“I am still speechless about the bread pudding. I grew up in New Orleans and have never had authentic Cajun food outside of South Louisiana until now. The jambalaya was truly Cajun (with no tomatoes) and it was perfectly delicious.” - Yelp Review

6. Clinton’s Soda Fountain

Old-fashioned soda and malt shop

100 W Maple Ave | Independence | clintonssodafountain.com

If you are willing to take about a 20 minute drive outside of Kansas City, it may be well worth it for this old-fashioned soda and malt shop.

Clinton’s Soda Fountain has been in business since 1988, and Harry Truman even worked here decades ago before becoming president! His favorite was always the butterscotch sundae with chocolate ice cream, but you have that and many more options to choose from if you bring your family to Clinton’s.

Kids will enjoy soda phosphates made with Polly’s Soda Pop syrups flavors (produced right here on the Square!), ice cream loaded with fun toppings and ice cream sundaes, milkshakes and floats, and more! Parents will be happy there is some substantial food as well such as grilled cheese, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and soup to balance out the sweets. We also think parents will enjoy the historical significance of this old-fashioned soda and malt shop, especially sitting at the 100 year old marble bar.

“History awaits this rich walk down memory lane with Harry Truman. Where he worked and ate. The ice cream is legit and they make waffle cones fresh on the iron. Highly recommend for an afternoon treat when in town.” - Yelp Review

7.  Char Bar

Beer garden with outdoor games

4050 Pennsylvania Ave | Westport | charbarkc.com

This is a great place to bring family, including kids, because the outdoor games are fun for the whole family!

Char Bar is a beer garden as well as an “urban playground,” featuring a patio bar, picnic tables, fire pit, bocce court, cornhole, ping-pong, “adult” swings and more.

As for food, you’ll find some of the best BBQ in Kansas City here, namely the Sunday Friday Chicken. The Sunday Fried Chicken is available on Sundays only from noon until it’s sold out.

You can get either a half bird ($15) or whole bird ($26) of Southern fried chicken served with whipped potatoes, pan gravy, slaw, buttermilk biscuit, and tabasco-honey.

They offer other snacks, sandwiches, desserts made from scratch, and more!

Char Bar is also open for brunch where The Icky Sticky, a cinnamon loaf topped with burnt rum caramel and salted pecans is a favorite shareable among families.

Did we mention furry children are also welcome?

You can purchase a GiftYa for Char Bar here!

“There's a great outdoor seating area with room to play bags or sit on swings. We ordered the whomper and it came out quickly. Great service. The food was great. Everything was delicious! We plan to come back when we are in town again!” - Yelp Review

8.  Cupini's

Family-owned Italian restaurant

1809 Westport Rd | Kansas City | cupinis.com

This Italian restaurant is built upon family centered recipes, so it only makes sense that this is a family and kid-friendly restaurant.

People come to Cupini’s for fresh pasta, pizza, paninis, and more. Our favorite is the Seafood Ravioli - homemade seafood ravioli in a marinara and white cream sauce with roasted red peppers and artichokes.

Kids tend to drift toward the pizza, especially the build your own pizza (you can make them pack it with veggies!). Cupini’s also offers a yummy gluten-free pizza crust. Both kids and parents enjoy the build your own pasta where you can choose a type of pasta, pasta sauce, and protein for around $11.

They have lots of desserts on deck for after your meal, so be sure to try a Cannoli, a piece of Tiramisu, or a slice of Chocolate Swirl Cheesecake to finish the night.

You can purchase a GiftYa for Cupini’s here!

“New favorite Italian restaurant in Kansas City! It feels like decently priced, quality Italian is hard to come by around here but Cupini's nails it! Also, GET DESSERT! The red velvet cake was creamy, light and perfectly velvety.” - Yelp Review
