How to Show Appreciation for Veteran’s Day

How to Show Appreciation for the People Who Deserve it Most

I am a thirty-something year old millennial with plenty of relatives and friends that happen to be veterans. The war machine is in the wrong. But our troops are not in the wrong. Our troops sign up to fight for the safety, security, and freedom of all their fellow American countrymen. It’s not their fault that our government (and our business institutions) are so corrupt that we spent more money rebuilding Afghanistan than we did on the entirety of the Marshall Plan after World War II.

Every year, approximately 200,00 men and women transition from active-duty service and return to civilian life. And studies show that more than half of veterans with a mental illness received no treatment for it within the past year. So if you are a good old fashioned red blooded American who loves the troops and wants to show them some appreciation this veteran’s day then I salute you. Somebody needs to do something to show our vets that we appreciate them.

So today I have a list of 10 great ways you can show appreciation for Veteran’s Day this year or any year.

I have options that will bring a smile to a veteran's face and hopefully some joy into their life.

And if you waited until the last minute to get them a gift, not to worry, lots of the options on the list accept our digital GiftYa gift cards. And these gift cards are great because you can instantly text them to the recipient’s phone which makes them a really easy and convenient way to show your appreciation this Veteran’s Day.

But I’ll wrap up the introduction here and get right to that list of great ways to show your appreciation this Veteran’s Day. And as always thanks for clicking, thanks for reading, and in this case, thank you for supporting our troops and our veterans!

1 - A Calm Subscription

Help Them Calm Their Mind and Get A Better Night’s Sleep

Millions of our veterans face serious mental health hurdles when they return to civilian life. And apparently the Department of Military and Veteran Affairs (VA) is unable to provide them with the mental health support they need. And that is where you can step in with a gift card to Calm. Calm is a subscription based app that provides you with all sorts of guided meditations, calming white noise, and relaxing ambiance to help you get a better night’s sleep.

And I’m not sure there is much more you can do to genuinely show your support for our veterans than by helping them manage their mental health. You can help bring peace to the mind of a veteran the same way they brought peace to our shores!

And while they obviously have steak, they also have tons of other great options including burgers, hotdogs, pork, chicken, seafood, sides, and even wine! A lot of veterans happen to be big outdoors people to begin with. I don’t know if that is because so much of our fighting force is made up of rural recruits or what but it is definitely a trend I have noticed. So if the veteran in your life needs a little appreciation this Veteran’s Day maybe take them to Bass Pro Shops and let them pick out a couple gifts for themselves. Or if you can’t be there to take them in person you can always get them a digital Bass Pro Shop gift card.

And then they can use the gift card to shop at any of Bass Pro Shop’s 154 locations across the country, or they can use it online right at Bass Pro Shop’s website to pick out exactly what they want. Whether they are into hunting, fishing, hiking, kayaking, camping, or backpacking, they will be able to find everything they could possibly want right at Bass Pro Shops!

Everybody enjoys seeing something they love done live. So try to find out any bands they might like, stand-ups they enjoy, or what professional sports team they root for and you could get them some tickets from StubHub to go see it live. And if you don’t know exactly what they would want tickets to, or what nights they would even have free to attend an event, you can always send them a StubHub gift card. Then that way they can pick out exactly the tickets they want on exactly the night that works for them and you don’t have to worry about accidentally getting them a gift they can’t even use.

A gift card to the movies can be a nice inexpensive way to show your appreciation this Veteran’s Day!

Everybody enjoys going out to the theater and seeing a new movie in a genre that they enjoy and our veterans are no different. I would get them a gift card to a local theater chain and help set them up for a great night out at the theater. Be sure you put enough value on the card that they can bring a date (or the family if they have kids). You want them to be able to cover the price of tickets, but also be able to get all their favorite snacks and drinks at the concession stand to make sure they have the full blown theater going experience. And then this way you have really gotten them a great memory of a night out they can always remember, as opposed to a standard gift that is a little more disposable.

Local veterans organizations can make the biggest difference in the lives of our veterans!

You can always make a donation to a local veterans organization. These local organizations can act directly in the lives of the veterans in your actual community. So if you want to make a difference, start off by making a difference locally.

8 - Volunteer at a VA Hospital

Volunteers Can Help the VA Make A Difference in the Lives of Veterans

Donating your time at the local VA hospital can be a great way to show appreciation for Veteran’s Day!

The VA has all sorts of shortcomings. But that isn’t really the VAs fault. The fact of the matter is that all of their funding comes from Congress and Congress just doesn’t want to spend the money to take care of our veterans. So what you can do is find your local VA hospital and volunteer some of your time to help them take care of veterans. The VA is overworked, under funded, and understaffed and this is one way that you can make a tangible difference in the lives of veterans immediately and will really help show your support this Veteran’s Day!

9 - Amazon
